Uganda's Embassy and Consulate General in China Host Successful Diaspora Engagement Event.
The Uganda Embassy in Beijing together with the Consulate General in Guangzhou, proudly hosted an engaging and informative event on October 4, 2024, aimed at strengthening connections with the Ugandan diaspora residing in China. This gathering underscored the Embassy’s commitment to fostering a supportive community for Ugandans abroad and facilitating meaningful interactions between the diaspora and various Ugandan governmental agencies.
The event opened with a warm welcome from H.E. Amb. Oliver Wonekha, Uganda's Ambassador to China, who delivered an inspiring speech emphasizing the importance of the diaspora in contributing to Uganda’s development. Ambassador Wonekha highlighted the diaspora's role as a vital link between Uganda and the global community, promoting trade, investment, and cultural exchange. "Our diaspora embodies the spirit of Uganda, and your contributions are invaluable not only to your families back home but also to the nation’s growth and development," she stated.
Following the Ambassador’s remarks, representatives from various Ugandan agencies virtually presented the roles and functions of their respective organizations. This provided diaspora members with insights into how these agencies operate and how they can engage with them. Key speakers included representatives from the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Centenary Bank, and the National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA).
The Uganda Investment Authority highlighted initiatives to encourage investment from the diaspora, outlining how Ugandans in China could leverage their resources and networks to foster business development in Uganda. The UIA urged attendees to explore investment opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, technology, and real estate, emphasizing that diaspora-driven investments are crucial to national development.
The NSSF provided information on the benefits of contributing to Uganda’s social security system while living abroad, including retirement savings and access to various social security benefits. They also outlined the process for diaspora members to register, contribute, and claim benefits, ensuring financial security for their futures.
Participants actively engaged in a networking session, expressing keen interest in collaboration opportunities and seeking clarification on how they could contribute to Uganda’s development from abroad. Embassy and Consulate staff facilitated discussions on creating a stronger network among Ugandans in China to support one another and share resources.
The event offered attendees an opportunity to connect with one another and build lasting relationships. Many expressed gratitude for the chance to reconnect with their homeland and contribute to its progress.
