Beijing, China – Uganda’s vibrant cultural heritage and exceptional tourism potential were on full display today at the renowned Kempinski Hotel in Beijing, as the Uganda Embassy in Beijing, under the stewardship of H.E. Ambassador Oliver Wonekha, and the Consulate General in Guangzhou, represented by Amb. Judyth Nsababera, hosted the eagerly awaited "Explore Uganda" Independence celebration. Marking Uganda’s 62nd Independence Anniversary, the event drew over 300 esteemed guests, including senior Chinese government officials, diplomats, leaders from the tourism sector, and business executives. It showcased Uganda as one of Africa’s most thrilling destinations for tourism and investment.

The celebration commenced with a vibrant cultural performance by Ugandan dancers, welcoming guests with a captivating display of Uganda's diverse cultural traditions. The rhythmic beats of traditional Ugandan drums, coupled with the dancers’ energetic movements, instantly set the tone for the evening, reinforcing the deep connection between Uganda and its cultural roots. Guests were also treated to Uganda's world-renowned premium coffee, served in branded cups, as they admired stunning displays showcasing Uganda’s most iconic tourist destinations. Murchison Falls, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest—the famous home of mountain gorillas—the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, and the peaceful shores of Lake Victoria were prominently featured, drawing enthusiastic interest.

In her remarks, H.E. Ambassador Oliver Wonekha passionately underscored Uganda’s unmatched appeal as a top tourism destination in Africa. She proudly noted, "Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, offers experiences unlike anywhere else. Our incredible wildlife, including the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos—paired with our unparalleled natural beauty and welcoming people, makes Uganda the perfect destination for Chinese travelers seeking adventure, culture, and relaxation." She further highlighted the strong and enduring partnership between Uganda and China, stating, "Our relationship with China has flourished over the decades, characterized by mutual respect, shared values, and common aspirations."

Amb. Judyth Nsababera, the Consul General of Uganda in Guangzhou, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of enhancing tourism, trade, and investment ties between Uganda and China. "Tonight’s celebration is not only about showcasing Uganda’s incredible tourism potential but also about presenting Uganda as a growing hub for investment in sectors such as agro-processing, manufacturing, and mineral value addition. We are committed to deepening our economic partnership with China," she remarked.

The evening's program also featured a comprehensive presentation highlighting key investment opportunities in Uganda, particularly in tourism and agriculture. Special focus was given to Uganda’s exceptional coffee, which is rapidly gaining popularity in China, and the country's growing agro-processing industry. These sectors offer significant opportunities for Chinese investors, positioning Uganda as a prime destination for economic collaboration.

In her Independence Day address, Ambassador Wonekha reflected on Uganda’s journey to independence and its ongoing partnership with China. "Uganda’s journey to independence is a story of resilience, determination, and hope. On October 9, 1962, we reclaimed our sovereignty and laid the foundation for a nation built on the principles of freedom, justice, and unity. As we celebrate this historic occasion, we recommit ourselves to securing and fortifying our destiny."

Ambassador Wonekha also acknowledged the critical role of China in Uganda’s development, particularly through forums like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). She congratulated China on hosting a successful FOCAC summit, saying, "The FOCAC summit held last month was a great success, resulting in 10 partnership actions that will guide China-Africa cooperation over the next three years. These actions—ranging from increased financial support to infrastructure development—will unlock unprecedented opportunities for growth."

As the evening progressed, guests enjoyed a lavish dinner of Ugandan cuisine and engaged in lively networking opportunities.
