Uganda Embassy in Beijing Hosts Uganda–China (Changsha) Agricultural Trade and Investment Forum
The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Beijing today successfully convened the Uganda–China (Changsha) Agricultural Trade and Investment Forum under the theme “Cultivating Partnerships for Prosperity.” The high-level forum, held in Changsha City, Hunan Province, brought together government officials, investors, business leaders, and development partners from both Uganda and China.
The Forum is a strategic initiative aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between Uganda and Hunan Province, with a strong focus on unlocking opportunities in agriculture, agro-industrialization, and value addition. It provided a premier platform for showcasing Uganda’s vast agricultural potential, facilitating business-to-business (B2B) engagements, and attracting strategic investments into Uganda’s priority sectors.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Uganda’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Oliver Wonekha, emphasized the timeliness of the Forum, noting that it comes in the wake of China’s zero-tariff policy on a wide range of exports from African countries, including Uganda. She highlighted that this development presents a significant opportunity for Ugandan producers and exporters to access the Chinese market more competitively, boost export volumes, and move up the value chain through agro-processing and value addition.
The Forum builds on the strong and growing Uganda–China relations, reinforced by high-level exchanges and sustained engagement between the Embassy and Hunan provincial authorities. It also follows productive consultations earlier this year aimed at strengthening trade, investment, and industrial cooperation.
Key sectors highlighted for investment include:
- Agro-processing and value addition
- Agricultural mechanization and technology transfer
- Cold chain logistics and post-harvest management
- Tourism and eco-tourism
- Mineral development and industrialization
- Science, technology, and innovation in agriculture
Aligned with Uganda’s National Development Plan IV (NDP4) and the ATMS (Agro-industrialization, Tourism, Minerals, and Science & Technology) framework, the Forum is expected to:
- Promote exports of high-quality Ugandan agricultural products to China under preferential and zero-tariff arrangements
- Facilitate partnerships between Ugandan enterprises and Hunan-based investors
- Advance bankable investment projects, particularly within the Uganda–Hunan Industrial Park
- Strengthen institutional collaboration and policy coordination between both sides
The event attracted senior officials from the Hunan Provincial Government, representatives from the Department of Commerce and Foreign Affairs Office, as well as a broad spectrum of investors, importers, and business leaders from the agriculture, manufacturing, and logistics sectors.
The Embassy underscored that the Forum marks an important step toward translating the strong diplomatic relations between Uganda and China into tangible economic outcomes leveraging enhanced market access to drive exports, industrialization, job creation, and shared prosperity.
