Chinese Delegation Visits Wagagai Mining Uganda Ltd, Applauds Industrial Progress and Bilateral Cooperation

A Chinese delegation led by Ambassador Oliver Wonekha paid an official visit to Wagagai Mining Uganda Ltd (Wagagai Gold and Oil Refinery) located in Buteba Subcounty, Busia District, where they were warmly received by the facility’s General Manager, Mr. Lee.

During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the progress of the project since its inception, with projections indicating an annual production capacity of 1.2 tonnes of gold. The refinery has emerged as a significant contributor to Uganda’s socio-economic development, having created over 2,000 jobs for Ugandans and provided technical training to more than 700 local staff. This has enhanced skills transfer, strengthened local capacity, and supported community development initiatives.

Ambassador Wonekha commended the investment, describing it as a strong symbol of the enduring partnership between Uganda and China. She emphasized the importance of such collaborations in advancing Uganda’s industrialisation agenda and economic transformation.

Chairman Diao also praised the project’s impact, noting that it stands as a model for successful foreign investment in Uganda. He further expressed growing interest from other Chinese companies in Uganda’s mining sector, highlighting its vast potential for sustainable development and mutual benefit.

The delegation later toured the facility under the guidance of Mr. Wang, the Public Relations Manager. The tour provided in-depth insights into key operational processes, including mineral sampling, laboratory testing, and gold extraction systems.

The Wagagai Gold and Oil Refinery continues to position itself as a landmark project in Uganda’s journey toward industrial growth, showcasing the tangible benefits of strategic international partnerships.
